What is the green card lottery?

The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, also known as the “green card lottery,” is an annual drawing conducted by the U.S. Department of State that awards 50,000 diversity visas to random non-citizens. The lottery pool consists of non-citizens from countries having low rates of immigration to the United States. To enter the lottery, you must apply to the U.S. Department of State during the registration period. Winners of the green card lottery are typically notified in the summer of the following year.
